Who: James Dean
Where: Savannah, GA.
What: Framed prints, enamel pins, and shirts.
Why: Why: James Dean is a Decatur-native whose father was a self-taught artist. James grew up drawing and playing music, but eventually focused on academics and the ability to support his family. After completing an engineering degree with Auburn University, he began work at Georgia Power Company. However, James was still intent on art, and was drawing in the mornings before work. He finally left Georgia Power in 1997, giving himself a year to be successful. While he did meet success early on, it was in 1999 that he created the famous Pete the Cat. James painted the cool cat into fine art; then a friend, Eric Litwin, wrote a story and song for the cat. Together they started publishing Pete the Cat as children’s books in 2008.
